In today’s digital world, entrepreneurs no longer need physical offices or storefronts to run a successful business. Whether you’re selling digital products, offering consultancy services, managing an e-commerce platform, or building a SaaS tool etc. your business might be fully online, yet entirely legitimate and revenue-generating.
This leads to a common question we hear from digital entrepreneurs:
“Can I establish a company in the Netherlands with my online business, and will that allow me to live there legally?”
How can you establish a company in the Netherlands with an Online Business?
Yes, you can. The Netherlands is one of the most entrepreneur-friendly countries in Europe, and it does not require your business to have a physical presence in order to register a company.
If your company operates online; for example, through remote services, subscriptions, digital goods, or consulting, you can still establish a legal entity in the Netherlands. This includes structures like the sole proprietorship (eenmanszaak) or private limited company (BV).

Does Registering a Company Automatically Grant Me a Visa?
No! setting up a company doesn’t automatically give you residency rights. However, certain visa types allow entrepreneurs to both legally run a business and live in the Netherlands.
For digital business owners, the most suitable options are:
1. The Startup Visa
If your business is innovative and offers a new solution or approach in its field, you may be eligible for the Startup Visa.
To qualify, you’ll need to collaborate with an officially recognized facilitator in the Netherlands. This partner supports your growth and helps validate your business idea in the Dutch ecosystem. The Unusual Space is a recognized facilitator and works closely with entrepreneurs who want to launch or scale in the Netherlands. Also, for joining a startup hub and to make collaborations it would be nice to have a facilitator which has more access to the startup community.
The Startup Visa grants you a 1-year residence permit, which can be extended or converted into another visa type if the business shows progress.
2. The Freelancer (ZZP) Permit
If you are already offering services as a freelancer; such as content creation, development, consulting, or design, you may be eligible for the ZZP residence permit.
This path allows non-EU entrepreneurs to legally work as independent professionals. To qualify, your business must be seen as beneficial to the Dutch economy, and you’ll need to submit a strong business plan, financial projections, and proof of existing or potential clients.

3. Other Options
Nationals of certain countries, such as the U.S., may benefit from special agreements like the Dutch American Friendship Treaty (DAFT), which makes it easier to obtain residency by setting up a business. While this doesn’t apply to all nationalities, the Startup and ZZP permits are open to most non-EU citizens with a strong plan.
Is My Online Business “Strong Enough” for a Visa?
This is a common concern:
“Is my business too small?”
“Will they take it seriously because it’s digital?”
Dutch immigration authorities don’t only assess the size of your business. They look at sustainability, value, and potential. You don’t need a huge team or massive turnover, but you do need to demonstrate that your business is:
Actively generating or projected to generate income
Professionally structured (website, branding, online presence)
Contributing economically (through tax, job creation, or innovation)
Built around a clear business model
Scalable or unique in your niche
So yes! If you’re already working with clients or selling online and can present a convincing case, your business may qualify as “strong enough.”
